The Basics of Automatic Gates

Centurion SMART trained

Trained by Centurion on its SMART motors, and each motor is sized to the gate.

Safe for children

Safety beams stop the gate from closing on a car, a child or the family pet.

Built for heavy traffic

Motors and booms serviced for the cycles a busy complex or office gate takes.

Linked to the intercom

Gate motors wired to the intercom or keypad, so visitors are let in properly.

Security gates are necessary tools in any security system and automatic or electric security gates increase the safety factor even more. There is a wide range of security gates available such as driveway gates, sliding gates, swing gates, entrance gates, industrial and commercial gates. These gates do not always look the same but a lot of the time can be made to suit both your needs and your architectural design.

When looking for an electric gate check the material that it is made of, as they need to be made to last. Electric gates can be made in wood, iron or steel. Iron gates are the easiest to maintain, as they are very resistant to environmental factors like weather. A wooden gate offers more variety in design as many types of wood can be used. It is also more flexible on the budget. However one of the biggest problems with using wood is that constant exposure to the elements will cause warping, buckling, cracking, blistering and other forms of destruction. Wood treatment methods have improved greatly but there will be a replacement of a wooden gate due to wear and tear sometime in the future. As an extra security measure, electric fencing can be added to the top of the gate.

The motor of the automatic gate makes it automatic and the motor needs to be perfectly compatible with the type of gate being installed. The motor needs to be programmed correctly so that the gate opens and closes in a specific way; for example so that the gate can be opened halfway and then closed from that halfway mark instead of being fully opened. The motor enables movement and can be single, double, mounted underground, or mounted externally.

Of course having an automatic gate means also having a remote control. A remote or radio control is the control device for activation of the electric gate. Very simply, the control device transmits a signal to a specific receiver over certain channels. Another control device is a proximity switch that opens closes in response to motion detectors. Overall an automatic gate is great perimeter defence for your home
