5 Best Garage Door Types

Garage gates/doors have many functions, the most important being to protect your vehicles. Garage doors also provide a secure point of entry to and from your vehicle as well as to your home. Garage doors can be important to the overall aesthetic of your home, and there are many materials and styles to choose from.

Retractable Doors

This is the most common type of garage door. They are attached by hinges to the roof, and retract parallel to the roof when they are opened. These are easy to install and maintain, and if any automation device is destroyed, they are relatively easy to open manually.

Canopy Doors

These are the most easy type of garage door to install, but are complicated to automate. Unlike retractable doors, there is no need for a track on your roof, which often makes canopy doors cheaper too. These doors swing open, then retract into the roof, leaving about a third of the door protruding. These are often made of heavy materials such as wood.

Sectional Doors

This kind of garage door can be installed in only a few hours. In the case of sectional doors, they will rise and then slip backwards within the roof space of your garage. These types of doors aren’t as secure as the other types, and you may need other devices to up your security.

Roller Garage Doors

This is another very common type of garage door. They are made out of many panels and literally roll up into the roof when they are opened. Because the material needs to be rather flexible for the door to roll up, they are not as strong and secure as other types of garage doors, and only certain materials can be used.

Side-Hinging Doors

These open similarly to a regular door. If you have a small drive way this may be problematic, as your vehicle will have to be far enough from the door for it to open fully. These doors are usually opened and closed manually, but have the security benefit of being able to attach locks.
