The Purpose Of a CCTV System

When considering a CCTV surveillance system, you should bear in mind that such a system has four main purposes.

They are: monitoring; detection; recognition and identification. Your surveillance system should monitor a designated area. CCTV Cameras need to be set up appropriately and a monitoring device should be installed. This can either be a specialised CCTV monitor or you could use a PC – if the system allows it. The next purpose is detection. Your system should be able to detect movement or whether someone has moved into your cameras field of view. Getting this right entails correct positioning of your cameras as well as choosing the appropriate cameras for certain locations. For example, some security cameras need a large amount of light to function properly, so placing them in a well lit room is advisable. Your system should allow you to recognise someone who has moved into your cameras field of view on more than two occasions. This means that your cameras footage should have a certain level of consistency. In other words, you should be able to recognise an individual in your cameras footage if you’ve seen them before. The final purpose of a CCTV system is to aid you in identifying an individual who is in the cameras view beyond a reasonable doubt. If these four requirements are satisfied then your CCTV system is functioning properly.

Getting your CCTV system to the abovementioned standard may require the use of a CCTV installation company.

Knowing how and where to place your cameras can be a challenging task, as there are many factors to take into account. A CCTV company will know the best way to do this, and will be able to complete the task in an efficient manner whilst maintaining a quality installation. A CCTV company will also be able to advise you on the legal aspects involved in owing a CCTV system, as well as how best to maintain your system. In some cases, CCTV software will be used which requires training. A CCTV company will be able to train you or your staff in this regard.
