CCTV In South Africa

South Africa is known for its beauty and its multicultural society, but unfortunately it’s also known for its crime rate. Very seldom do South Africans leave their cars running when they quickly pop into the convenience store, or leave their bags on a bench to throw some rubbish away in the bin. With all the crime (or perceived crime) going on, it’s difficult not to worry about something happening to your possessions. For businesses, protecting and securing their premises and their means of production ensures that the owner’s interests are protected, as well as that of their employees. One of the ways in which this is achieved is with the use of a CCTV security system. A CCTV, or closed circuit television, security system almost guarantee’s the protection of the business owners premises and means of production. Such security systems act as a deterrent to any would be criminal activity, and if something does happen, it’s all caught on tape, so to speak.

A CCTV security system is equipped with a number of surveillance cameras and a digital video recorder (DVR) – for storage of the camera footage. Some CCTV systems (the IP CCTV systems) include the ability to view footage over the internet wherever you are in the world, whilst with other systems the surveillance videos are directly observable on a centralised CCTV monitor. The IP system gives the business owner the comfort of knowing that he/she can view their surveillance footage at anytime, anywhere.

Whilst CCTV security is not the be all and end all of security in the workplace, or at home for that matter, they do provide the business or homeowner with the ability to monitor their premises for any unscrupulous behaviour. This is especially warranted in the South African environment where crime makes the running of a business a little more difficult in comparison to countries with low crime rates. By helping to prevent criminal activity, a CCTV surveillance system affords the business owner with the opportunity to keep their business running smoothly, which in turn makes the business more profitable.
