Having a keen interest in security and crime cases in Sandton and being part of a number of body corporates based in Bryanston, Rivonia, Fourways, Lone hill and Craigavon One Point has it’s finger on the pulse of any new or potential crime hotspots with a particular interest in home robberies and hijackings.
Recently we read a number of reports of residences in Sunning Hill being targeted by what seemed like a professional gang of house breakers. While we won’t go into too much detail of the modus operandi the outline trend is to “case” complexes and private residences in luxury (recently stolen) vehicles.
One point decided to embark on a bit of a mission to assess the physical security of these targeted location from the perspective of a criminal surveying the property from the outside when security events are triggered.
Now call us a biased electric fence ins5taller but in EVERY case we looked at the electric fence was either non-existent or not working at the time.
We had a quiet chat to the security staff at the entrance of the complex (happened to know some of them) The complex body corporate had been notified that the fence had not been working for over 2 months! Apparently the preceding two months a next door building site ladder had been found against the fence snapping two of the fence wires and shorting the system. Obviously this triggered the alarm and the system “worked” but the criminals sat watching who / how / when / and what the response was to the security trigger event (from the safety of said SUV) they blended into the affluent suburb and it is thought on even one occasion to have asked one of the security guards “when the fence would be fixed?”. Cheeky buggers.
Needless to say it’s brazen triggering and “false alarms” in most cases that precede the security breeches. Residents get tired of responding or fixing the fence or it slips off the body corporate radar and becomes a problem down the line.
